Little had changed since master classes were established as the preferred way of teaching, until ICT were established as learning tools in the classroom. Before that, there were just teachers, a blackboard and a piece of chalk. There were teachers, students, and a few tests on concepts that they would forget once they turned the page in.
However, everything changed for the better, I think, and nowadays, classrooms are a bit different: we find teachers and technology along with a lot of efficient and seductive sources of knowledge such as the internet, television, video games, etc. There is so much information out there, that it might be thought that anything mentioned in class could be learnt by students on their own just googling it. Thus, what would be the point of teacher's work if that was true?
Innovating is equivalent to making an effort, to introducing in class new ways of working, evaluating, and teaching. Collaborative learning, project based learning, gamification, and some other techniques can all be used in the classroom in order to enrich contents and curricular development.
The tools and knowledge are there and ready to be used. Hence, it's on us to make subjects attractive to students.
